Parent assets and dependent assets
You can link two assets and define a dependency relationship, by specifying which asset relies on the other to function correctly. This supports configuration management by enabling impact analysis — for example, assessing the effects of a malfunctioning parent asset within an IT system.
You can add a server as a parent asset and then link it to a workstation, which is the server’s dependent asset. If several workstations are dependent on the server, they must be linked to the server individually, thus forming individual 'parent asset' and 'dependent asset' pairs.
The dependencies (parent-dependent) and relationships (main-sub-sibling) between assets can be viewed in the graphical CI viewer. See
Understanding the Graphical CI viewer for more information.
