Configuring a data stream
A data stream is a real-time flow of sensor-generated events that are immediately processed and displayed as data points in the Planon IoT platform.
Unlike stored or historical data, a data stream reflects instantaneous changes triggered by device activity, such as button presses or sensor detections.
Key characteristics
The main characteristics of a data stream are:
Real-time updates: Events are displayed as they occur.
Event-driven: Triggered by a sensor action (e.g., button press).
Historical storage: Only the latest event is displayed as Last triggered.
You can click View historical data to see when the data stream was triggered.
Integration with rules: Events can be used to trigger business notifications or automate workflows (e.g., work order creation).
Configuration
1. In Templates, configure a Group template.
Event name: provide a name - this name will be displayed in the data point.
Type code: select 993 - Instantaneous event.
Description: provide a description.
Data to stream: select the product.
2. Save the configuration.
You have configured a Data stream data point.
What's next
When your device is linked to this digital twin and the button is pressed, the data point directly displays the event. The event is displayed as Last triggered as indicator because there is no value to display.
When you create a rule (Rules > All rules), with an Instantaneous condition, you can select the event group template - when this event is triggered, a business notification can be sent to the Planon application, which can result in creating an automatic work order.
Data stream is also available for Planon as a Platform:
In Templates > Group templates, app developers can create Data stream data points
In Rules > All rules, app developers can create a rule
